Aquaponics is a unique organic gardening method that is very efficient. And cost effective especially if you know how to source the components that you will use to build your system. The aquaponic tanks used in your system can be almost any tank or container that is safe and non toxic. You can buy your tanks or you can make them your self. The only limitations that you will encounter when choosing your aquaponics tanks are your budget, the size of the aquaponics system that you want to build, and the amount of room you have or the area in which you are constructing your aquaponic system.
There are almost an unlimited number of different containers that you can use to house the fish that you are rearing in your aquaponics system. The only requirements are that the tanks are water tight and that they haven’t previously contained any toxic chemicals that would be harmful to the fish. The following list of containers can be used to hold fish for an aquaponics system: Rubber Made totes, standard fish tank style aquariums, children's swimming pools, large food storage containers with the tops removed, even a five sided wooden box with a pond liner to hold the fish and water would work, large water haul containers also will do, your only limitation with an aquaponics tank is, cleanliness aside, your imagination
You can find many places on the internet that sell purpose built aquaponics tanks. Simply doing a Google search with the terms “aquaponics tanks” will give you an untold number of results to chose from. The main draw back of purchasing your tanks will be the cost. Its best to shop around a bit before you commit to buying any aquaponics tanks online. Ebay may have some deals now and again, so you can search there. Craig's list can also have aquaponics tanks listed for for sale. If you perform a Google search for the containers listed above or even search Craig's list and Ebay for the tanks you will most likely find an excellent deal.
If you don't have the funds to buy a ready made tank or you are the do it your self-er type and would just like to build your own set of aquaponics tanks. not to worry. If you want to build your own tanks then you will only need a few tools and supplies depending on what kind of tanks your are building, ie are you modifying a large food storage container or are you building a plywood box type with a pond liner.
When modifying containers you really only need a jigsaw or sawzall to cut the top of enclosed containers and some sand paper to smooth any rough edges. If you are scratch building your aquaponics tanks from wood. Then you may need, aside from the wood of course, a hammer or nail gun, nails, a ruler or tape measure, a water proof liner which can be a tarp or pond liner, and screws and a screw gun or drill driver if you don't want to use nails. Once you have your tools and materials gathered, all you need to do is construct a 5 sided box and then line it with a tarp or pond liner. Secure the liner to the inside of the box with staples from the outside via an over-lapped portion of the liner.
Aquaponics tanks are a necessary part of any aquaponics system. You can find suitable tanks almost everywhere. You can buy ready made tanks, or you can make your own. Just make sure that what ever containers you use for your aquaponics setup are clean enough to eat from, other wise you will end up with dead fish when you go to use them.
